Lessons of anatomy, skeletons and so on; medicine in art, a world in the world

Over the centuries medicine has also played an important role in art. There are examples of how the human body - subjected to surveys and studies - has become a real artistic expression. Which has enthused not only professionals in the sector, but all art lovers.

From the mid-17th century Flemish school to the first half of the 20th century, we have seen anatomy classes, human body studies, and medical visits to patients. Among the most illustrious names have been tested in this test. Just think of Rembrant and Pablo Picasso.

Here are some examples.

The Anatomy Lesson of Dr. Nicolaes Tulp by Rembrant is perhaps the most famous work of its kind. Probably the most loved by doctors and specialists, it is an oil painting on canvas dated by 1632, kept at the Mauritshuis in The Hague.

The painting represents Nicolaes Tulp, professor of anatomy, intent in the dissection of a man executed by hanging. Since there were no refrigerated storage devices for the bodies, at that time, these studies had to be carried out during the winter and the coldest months.

The osteology lesson of Dr Sebastiaen Egbertsz is another peculiar example. In this case, the disomy object is a skeleton and the constitution of the bone system. Definitely one of the salient works.

Il Ferito, by Gaspare Traversi, preserved at the Gallerie dell'Accademia in Venice, is a splendid representation that strikes for its dark colours, almost dramatic tones of the whole, interspersed only by the diaphanous skin of the wounded man, and his garments in various shades of blue.

In the end, Science and Charity, by Pablo Picasso. Made in 1897 and kept at the Museu Picasso in Barcelona, it is an oil painting on canvas, representing a doctor and a nun, rushed into the patient's room, in this case a woman. You can see how the doctor, portrayed as a stereotypical representation of that age, measures the heartbeat of the patient.
