Billie Achilleos is the author of the “leather zoo" created for Louis Vuitton, comprising 29 animals, among which the dog, the hedgehog, the frog, the chameleon, the owl, the grasshopper, which are then sold at auction to the more affluent. The project, entitled Maroquinaris Zoologicae, is a kind of bestiary with varied uses: there are bags, trunks, backpacks, key chains and belts. Author of marionettes and puppets for live performances of Disney, the artist tells how this idea arose naturally: "I am the kind of person who sees shapes in the clouds or in soap bubbles in the bathtub," says Billie Achilleos. "Often I think I see the faces in the flowers of the wallpaper. When I started working on this project, I went into a Louis Vuitton store looking at bags like they were animals. As if they were already there and it was only a matter of opening your eyes to realize that a keychain in Damier Graphite was, in fact, the paw of a beaver. Or that another accessory in Monogram canvas was the leg of a grasshopper. There is no predetermined pattern," she says," when there is a pile of bags and small leather goods in front of me, a few hours later there's a frog."
