PhD in History of Science, University of Pisa (dissertation on "Caravaggio and Natural Magic"); Laurea in History of Art, University of Pavia. He grew up in the countryside of Pavia where he learned to identify plants. He continued to explore his interest in botany at the University of Pavia, where he presented a dissertation on the Iconography of Mullein (Verbascum spp.). He curated the comments in an edition of Historia Plantarum, a herbal manuscript (14th century), using a new method to recognize the many different plants portrayed. This research, based on techniques used in the late Middle Ages and Renaissance and lost to our 'modern eyes,' enhanced his knowledge and skills in the field and led him to concentrate on the symbolism of plants and animals.
